So, it had to be done. Modern Warfare 2.
Honestly, I wasn't looking forward to it THAT much, but once I had actually went and paid for it...I honestly couldn't wait to get it going.
The install was smooth, thanks to the retail version (DVD's) it took less than 5 minutes to be ready to play. A small update from Steam (Took about a minute) and I was off! (I've heard that the full 16GB download from Steam can take several hours, even on a 8MB+ Internet connection, add on install time and other components, Visual Redistrib. First time boot etc, and you're looking at a LONG time to get playing.) I picked up my copy from ASDA (Wal*Mart) for the sale price of £29.99, a whole £10 cheaper than buying it from Steam directly.
I only played the first mission, "The Pit" where the player has to complete an obstacle course apparently designed to keep the "Rangers" in shape and keep their combat skills up. This is actually a level designed for the sole intention to get YOU used to playing the game, something I really do like about games now, they train you to beat them before they even start properly!
After "The Pit" I went on to play a round on "Rust" with a friend of mine, he kicked my level 1 ass all over the place, but it was fun. Overall the multiplayer is much faster paced than Modern Warfare 1 and seems more 'streamlined' to work on a non-Alienware PC, something I don't have. Don't get me wrong, I was getting 40+ FPS on an Nvidia 9200GT, by no means a 'high-end' card, but it managed just fine with running Modern Warfare 2 on high graphics, 2x Anti-aliasing...Another thing I just don't understand, what the hell is 'Anti-Aliasing' anyway?
I love the updated engine. "IW 4.0" (Sounds like a Die Hard movie). This engine fully utilizes modern hardware and software to deliver a much more 'fluid' gaming experience. In my opinion it was about time that they reworked their in-house engine. Games should really have a new engine each time, but World at War had the same engine as Modern Warfare 1, but retextured and slightly optimized for higher-end systems.
Dedicated Servers...WHO CARES? At the end of the day, you can still PLAY the game, be happy with that.
I don't have a rating system here, but out of 10 I'd give it an 8. Not perfect, but almost. I don't like the change in controls from MW1, I liked hitting V to stab people. I know you can re-bind the controls, but you shouldn't have to. There was nothing wrong with the old system, so that's the reason for this not getting a 10. Don't fix what aint broken.
All the best,
